April 8 Solar Eclipse Information

Posted on March 18, 2024

While the Indianapolis area and south will experience 100% totality for the solar eclipse occurring on Monday, April 8, 2024, the St. Joseph County area will only experience 96%.

The Michiana area will start experiencing darkness at 1:53 p.m., lasting until 4:23 p.m., with 96% totality occurring at 3:09 p.m. and lasting just over 4 minutes.

Click to watch the video below and hear from P-H-M Digital Video Theater and Planetarium Director Melinda O’Malley as she shows us what to expect in our area.

My name is Melinda O'Malley and I'm the director  of the Penn Harris Madison digital video theater planetarium Air and Space Museum and on April  8th 2024 much of Indiana will be experiencing a total solar eclipse however in our area  we will be experiencing a partial eclipse we will have near 97% coverage in 2017 that  was near about 88% coverage the moon will appear to connect the Sun at the bottom  right corner at about 13 p.m. and then continue until maximum coverage at about 3:09  p.m. and then finishing at about 4:23 p.m.

with its last contact of the Sun the next  time Indiana will experience anything like totality is the year 20199 so get out there  observe it 97% is pretty incredible [Music]

Because the partial eclipse time is occurring around elementary school dismissal times and based on the recommendations of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the IDOE, P-H-M will have an eLearning day on April 8. Click here for more information on that decision.

Thanks to Old National Bank and P-H-M Education Foundation, all students will have a pair of eclipse glasses to use at home when watching the eclipse with their families. The glasses will be sent home the week of March 25 before P-H-M’s Spring Break.

DVT Director Mrs. O’Malley demonstrates how the eclipse glasses should be used.

It's Melinda O'Malley again director of the  Penn Harris Madison digital video theater in Planetarium and right now I want to talk to  you about these eclipse glasses no they are not sunglasses these are the only glasses you  can safely view the sun with do not look at the sun without these eclipse glasses at any time  in our area because we will be experiencing a partial eclipse never touch the lenses of  these glasses so to wear them you simply slide them on as if you were wearing regular  glasses thanks to Old National Bank and the
